Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a back extensor strengthening exercise in chronic neck pain patients.

Method: Subjects were randomly assigned to 2 groups; back exercise group (n=12) and conventional treatment group (n=10). Both groups received conventional treatment including medication, physical therapy and trigger point injection. The back exercise group performed back muscle strengthening exercise 3 times per week for 4 weeks and 2 times per week for another 4 weeks. Visual analog scale (VAS), Pain Rating Score (PRS) were measured initially and 8 weeks after treatment.

Results: There was no significant difference in subject age or the degree of pain between the 2 groups. The back exercise group showed a greater improvement in VAS, PRS compared to conventional treatment group after 8 weeks of treatment (p£¼0.05).

Conclusion: The back extensor strengthening exercise is beneficial to patients with chronic neck pain.
